Increasingly, a number of parents around the world are deciding to send their children to study at U.S. “boarding schools”. A boarding school is a very particular type of school that has dormitory facilities on campus where students live for the duration of their studies. Some particularly famous boarding schools are Choate Rosemary Hall, Deerfield Academy, Georgetown Preparatory School and Groton School. The vast majority of international school students who attend these types of schools go to a very specific type of boarding school – College Preparatory Schools. The primary function of Prep Schools is to prepare students for the academic rigors of college life – these schools are meant to act as feeder schools for U.S. colleges.

What are the benefits to attending such a school for an international student? The benefits usually fall into the following categories a) an ability to learn from excellent teachers in a superior academic environment b) access to ESL (English as a Second Language) classes and cultural immersion c) a taught curriculum that is aimed at preparing students for college etc.

A great place to learn general information about these types of schools is at Boarding School Review. More to come as we interview some boarding school admissions staff on their approaches to international students admissions.
